Sometimes Painting Concepts Change

Work in Progress: Out of Darkness

When I started this painting, I had a complex narrative in mind that would further illustrate the personal journey of one of my models. As sometimes happens with a painting, the concept has changed. In this case, it has simplified, focusing entirely on the phoenix.
I usually try to force a painting to fit my original concept, and it almost always ends poorly. I overwork the painting and lose beautiful details, or it doesn’t come out as refined as I would like because I have lost the balance between story and image.

I am currently at a place where I have to wait for the paint to dry before proceeding to the next layer. I will begin setting up new paintings in the meantime and come back to this one when it is ready. If you would like to see the step-by-step photos of my progress so far, please consider subscribing to one of my Patreon Tiers that include exclusive content and tutorials. I will be adding my current progress on this painting soon, as well as new concepts and painting reveals.
